Usually students need to take Math, English, and a Foreign Language. Please see exemptions for placement tests on the following links:

If I am required to take a placement test, should I take it before my Orientation Sessions?
Yes, the earlier you take the placement tests, the easier your advising session will be.  If you take your placement tests on or before the first day of orientation, your advisor will have your placement test scores when you meet with them on the second day of orientation.

I have AP credit but UGA does not have record of my AP scores before my Orientation session. Do I need to take placement tests?

Classes fill up quickly. If you want to register while at orientation, you should take the test. UGA will use the highest score for placement.

I tested during Orientation.  How long will it take my Placement Exam scores to post in my Athena account?

Ideally, scores are posted and ready for advisors on the second day of orientation and will post in your Athena account under “Test Scores.”

What do my placement test scores mean?

You can find a chart with this info here.

Placement tests cost $28.50.  Please schedule your exam by going to testing.uga.edu and pay online for you test. You must bring your Photo ID to your appointment.

May I retake a placement test?

There are NO retakes on the Math and Foreign Language placement tests.  The English placement test may be retaken once if you miss the cut off score by one point and you receive written permission from the English Department.

Can I walk in to take a placement test without scheduling an appointment?

A student may walk in, schedule their appointment on their phone and be checked in for testing if we have an open seat available.  However, we recommend scheduling your test online prior to the day of your appointment in order to assure a seat.

If I choose not to take a placement test during orientation may I take the test later in the year?

Yes, placement tests are administered year round. Registering online for your appointment at testing.uga.edu is preferred to ensure you have a seat.

How long should I expect to wait before my score will appear on my Athena account?

When placement exams are taken throughout the year, the exams are scored and uploaded every Tuesday.  It can take up to one week after the upload for scores to appear on Athena.

Am I allowed to take the Math placement test?

It is to your best interest to take the Math placement test before meeting with an advisor (unless you have dual-enrollment credit for Pre-Cal or you have AP credit exempting you from the placement test).  Once you register for a math class, you are no longer eligible to take the Math placement test.

What is on the Math placement test?
The math department advises all students needing math at UGA to take the Math placement exam to ensure you are placed appropriately.
