The English Departmental Placement exam gives students the opportunity to earn credit in ENGL 1101 and could place them into ENGL 1102.

Do I need to take the English Placement Exam?
If you meet one of the following criteria, you do not need to take the English Placement Exam and will register for ENGL 1101:

  • Scored 590 or higher on the SAT Critical Reading Test/Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Section; OR
  • Scored 26 or higher on the ACT English Test

Can I place out of English 1101?
You may place out of English 1101 and receive three hours of credit if you:

  • Scored a 3 or 4 on the AP Literature & Composition or the AP Language & Composition exam;
  • Scored a 4, 5, or 6 on the IB High Level (HL) English exam;
  • Scored a 5, 6, or 7 on the IB Standard Level (SL) English exam;
  • Earn a score of 22 (part 1) and 20 (part 2) on the English Placement Exam

Can I place out of English 1102?
You may place out of both English 1101 and 1102 and receive six hours of credit if you:

  • Scored a 5 on the AP Literature & Composition or the AP Language & Composition exam
  • Scored a 7 on the IB High Level (HL) English exam
  • You earned dual enrollment credit in English 1101/ English 1102 or earned credit at another approved USG institution

If you do not meet any of the above criteria, take the English placement exam.

The English placement exam consists of two parts, mechanics and rhetoric. The cost of the exam is $30, and this exam contains 60 questions and lasts 60 minutes.

Once I take the English Placement Exam, do I need to do anything else?
Students who are required to take the English Placement Exam and score below a certain level are required to take an additional timed Writing Sample for potential placement in a writing-focused class. Students will be notified by email or letter if additional testing is necessary.

* Students with an AP English score of 3 in either English Lit & Composition or English Language & Composition should consider taking the Departmental English Placement Test and discuss the results with their Academic Advisor to further analyze their strengths in English mechanics and rhetoric and their preparedness for ENGL1102.
